Reality Checks

Welcome to the "Reality-Checks.org" website.

The purpose of this site is to provide an on-line forum that facilitates honest and open discussion (that is both objective and courteous), on topics of significant interest to humanity as a whole.  There is a wide spectrum of views and understanding on these topics (and some groups and individuals hold their views very strongly).  This site allows people to contribute relevant facts and their interpretation of those facts, and to humbly submit such interpretation to wider scrutiny in order to refine (and at times completely revise) their own perceptions.  While people of relevant professional status can make invaluable contributions (of both facts and commonly accepted interpretation), there is a place for "lay" contributors to make observations and ask good questions, and there is a place too (because at times we all need it) for the voice of 'a small boy' who is unaware of 'the system' enough to spontaneously shout "The emperor is not wearing any clothes!" (to use the imagery of Hans Christian Anderson).

Contributions to these discussions can be made in the form of a 'wiki', formal papers, essays, Q&A, and blogs.  Readers are able to score respective contributions on both their content and tone.  Summarized 'grades' are shown together with the contributions.  These affect the order of presentation of various contributions in any section of the site, and provide a safety mechanism for removing unworthy or malicious 'contributions'.

Foundations for running reality checks on ourselves:

We are all clever enough to deceive ourselves.  We are usually slow to realize that what we were first told (and especially taught) about something isn't true - or at least isn't the full story.  Most of us don't like being considered as "odd" by others, and so tend to stay within accepted norms (which usually is a good thing).  We have a propensity to justify our own thinking (and actions) and convince ourselves that we are "right".  These often combine to give us a perception of reality that is skewed to some degree, and in some cases 'quite wrong'.  What is true of us as individuals, is also true of us collectively as families, organisations, and wider society in general.  Correcting this tendency requires humility, conscious effort, and an ongoing desire to continually seek out new 'truth' and to let it recalibrate our thinking (and attitudes) according to the new 'realities' we discover.
